Our Story
Mae-Luk was born from a mother-daughter bond and a shared devotion to limitless creativity, vibrant patterns, and uncompromising comfort.
As a South African living in Southeast Asia, I’ve been immersed in a whirlwind of eclectic cultures, dynamic cityscapes, and dazzling fashion. Yet, my heart always returns to home. I’ve long dreamed of bridging the gap between my worldwide adventures and the country I love most: South Africa.
In 2021, fuelled by curiosity, I traded the familiar landscapes of the Eastern Cape for the kaleidoscopic energy of Thailand. It didn’t take long to fall in love with this spirited and soulful country. When I stepped into the textile mecca of Bangkok, I was met with an explosion of fabric that felt like a revelation. I didn’t just see material; I saw limitless potential and a tangible piece of Thai-Indian heritage that I knew I had to share.
My mother and I immediately recognised that South Africa was missing this vivid aesthetic. We chose the name Mae-Luk, which means “Mother-Daughter” in Thai — a tribute to an unbreakable, lifelong bond. It is the perfect embodiment of our relationship and our shared vision.
“Dreams in Colour” represents our journey to build a business centered on what we cherish, and it invites you to experience your own vivid, restful escapes.
The soul of Mae-Luk lies in the ancient tradition of hand-block printing. Our prints pay homage to Pha Lai Yang — meaning “Patterned Fabric.” Historically, this was a designed-to-order Siamese Chintz, where Thai royal patterns were sent to Indian master printers to be brought to life.
Today, this artistry continues through the Indian-Thai families in Bangkok who have spent generations acting as a bridge between Indian textile heritage and Thai fashion. These patterns are block printed in India and manufactured in Thailand by lifelong artisans using techniques passed down through families.
